MANILA, Philippines — Filipino rock icon Joseph William Feliciano “Pepe” Smith passed away on Monday. He was 71.

The news of Smith’s passing was confirmed by his daughter Daisy Smith-Owen on Facebook.

“Thank you for being the best dad in the world. I know you’re in the best place now, no more pains, papa,” she said.

“I know you’re in the best place now, no more pains papa.. I will see you in a few days. I love you to the moon and back.”

Smith was rushed to the hospital early morning on Monday, January 28.

On September 17, Smith underwent a gallbladder surgery at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila.

Several years ago, Smith was also rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke that left him with speech impairment.

In 1970, Smith joined the rock band Juan dela Cruz Band as a vocalist and drummer along with guitarist and vocalist Wally Gonzales and bassist and vocalist Mike Hanopol.

Smith was a member of the Juan de la Cruz Band, considered to be the pioneer of Pinoy rock. Among its hits are “Himig Natin”, “Beep Beep,” and “Balong Malalim”.
